Mark Twain wrote, "There are two times in a man's life when he should not speculate: when he can't afford it, and when he can." Another independent maid goes bad. This one in Guelph, Ontario. In 1973 Neve Campbell was born in Guelph, Ontario at the height of the Brady Bunch hit television series. Naturally this brings us back to Alice, the Brady Bunch Maid.

This housekeeper, Deborah Pauley, 56, had been working for the same people for 25 years. They were "friends". Ms. Pauley stole $168,000 from her so called friend. To read the rest of this tale click here. The Judge told Ms. Pauley this was an extreme breach of trust:

When I think of independent housekeepers I think of Alice from the Brady Bunch. Ann B. Davis played the role of Alice, and in doing so set the standard for all housekeepers for our generation. But Alice from the Brady Bunch would never rob Mr. and Mrs. Brady. She was the perfect housekeeper. She never had to "renegotiate" her compensation package. Alice had no baggage. No personal problems. Alice had no addictions. No man friends with addictions. No chance that Mr. Brady might be attracted to her...I mean come on. And there was zero chance that Alice would ever do anything dishonest. Nada. Zilch.

I guess if we could clone Alice from the Brady Bunch, my company would cease to be relevant. So would every professional maid service in North America. How could we compete with Alice? Good thing Alice does not exist. Good thing she is just a character that sprang from Sherwood Schwartz's pen.

Yesterday we discussed the motivational aspects of greed, from the perspective of Michael E. Gerber, author of the E-Myth series, and Milton Friedman. Bottom line both Gerber and Friedman agree with Gordon Gekko, the character in the 1987 box office hit Wall Street. Greed is good.

How about fear...is fear good? Does fear motivate? Does fear motivation control workers' output?

A factory worker in China must work long hours for little pay under harsh work conditions, but they are fearful. They are fearful because there are millions and millions of peasants within 20 miles that would covet that factory job. The factory management capitalize on that fear of loss and push their employees further, and further in order to drive cost down. Fear still works in places like China to motivate employees.

This type of fear is hard for us Americans to imagine. Even our unemployed do not fear dieing of hunger or disease...not so in China. We are a wealthy society and thank God for that. Because of this Fear is not our strongest motivator...and we have greed to thank for that.

What could bring more security than investing in yourself?

If you work for a large company how much security do you currently enjoy? What guarantee's do you have? If you work for Goldman Sacks, be prepared for the scores of layoffs being planned at this moment. If you work for Bank of America or Countrywide start dusting off your resume. Even Anheuser-Busch is gearing up for a round of cost cutting, and that means layoffs; the only group at Anheuser-Busch that have no fear would be the Budweiser Clydesdale's. According to this Wall Street Journal article, there have been 475,948 layoffs this year (so far).

According to these US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, government workers are far less likely to be laid off. The security blanket is much thicker when you work for the government. If you are looking for a steady paycheck this might be the best move for you.

However, if you have bigger dreams you need to stand on your own. You need to build something. When we purchased our first franchise in 1990 we didn't realize that we would never work for anyone else ever again. It was our July 4th, our Bastille Day. We had bought into the American Dream. I am here to tell you that we have never regretted that decision.

Work for someone else and surround yourself with the illusion that you have job security. Buy a Franchise and that illusion of security is replaced with the reality of the situation. You become the bottom line. You control your destiny. If you would bet on yourself then you "maid" a good decision. If you know enough about yourself to not want to invest in yourself, you are better off working for someone else.

The great thing about being part of a franchise is that your are in business for yourself, but you are never by yourself. The royalties that you pay are less than the value you receive in being part of something greater than yourself.
